How Obesity Can Affect GI Health Conditions

What are the effects of obesity on GI health conditions? It’s a bigger problem than you think, especially in the United States. That’s why we asked leading endoscopist and obesity expert Dr. Pichamol Jirapinyo to share her expertise with us, fresh off of co-authoring “Obesity Primer for the Practicing Gastroenterologist” in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. We discuss the options available for obesity management, as well as why a multidisciplinary approach may be helpful for patients and providers.

Dr. Pichamol Jirapinyo

Dr. Pichamol (Sigh) Jirapinyo is an advanced endoscopist and bariatric endoscopist at Brigham andWomen’s Hospital where she also serves as the Director of Bariatric Endoscopy Fellowship and Associate Director of Bariatric Endoscopy. Dr. Jirapinyo’s clinical and research interests are in the areas of endoscopic bariatric and metabolic therapies as well as endoscopic simulation and education. In addition to performing therapeutic procedures including EUS and ERCP, Dr. Jirapinyo routinely performs both primary endoscopic bariatric procedures and a range of endoscopic treatments of bariatric surgical complications, including weight regain or inadequate weight loss. Additionally, she routinely prescribes lifestyle intervention and FDA-approved weight loss medications for patients with obesity and metabolic diseases.
